Onsite Siemens HMI diagnostics
Unified Comfort Panel powers on, but WinCC Runtime will not start?
A panel showing its Control Panel or startup screen instead of the operator project is a different fault from a running HMI whose values are stale. The machine may be unable to operate normally without its interface, but the panel symptom does not prove the PLC stopped. West Engineering Systems investigates onsite controls faults to identify the problem and help determine the next action. We are based in Appleton, Wisconsin, and offer field service across the United States.
Discuss the HMI Startup FaultCall (920) 851-6363 with the displayed panel state.
Does the panel boot, and what appears on screen?
Siemens' WinCC Unified Runtime startup documentation says the downloaded project normally starts automatically; its Unified Comfort Panel auto-start setting governs whether and when the project starts. These references apply to Unified panels; identify the actual HMI family before interpreting them.
Control Panel appears
If the operating system and Control Panel load but the operator project does not, record its exact screen and any startup message. This is different from a dark or unpowered screen. Do not assume that an auto-start setting is the only possible cause.
Project opens then closes
Note whether Runtime displays briefly, whether an error appears and whether the issue began after a project transfer or power event. Project availability, version compatibility and device diagnostics may matter to a qualified investigation.
Operator screen remains open
If Runtime stays open but tags or alarms cannot update from the PLC, the issue is more likely in the HMI/PLC communication path. Preserve the connection message rather than treating it as a Runtime startup failure.
Onsite diagnostic goal: separate operating-system startup, project/Runtime behavior and controller communication using existing panel evidence and the authorized TIA Portal project.
What to gather before calling
- Facility, machine and HMI model/order number if known.
- Photo of the screen, exact startup error and whether the Control Panel is visible.
- Whether the project ever opens, when the problem started, and any recent panel/project transfer or power event.
- Current PLC status if already visible from another authorized display, plus a verified project backup if available.
Different HMI symptom?
If the project is running but shows no PLC connection, stale tags or connection alarms, see the HMI-to-PLC communication guide. An engineering laptop that cannot connect to a PLC belongs in the TIA Portal online-connection guide. When the machine stopped for an unknown reason and the HMI is only one clue, start with the machine-down overview.
Request onsite Unified Panel diagnostics
Tell us the panel model, what the screen shows and what the machine was doing when Runtime disappeared. We can discuss whether an onsite investigation is appropriate.
