Onsite Siemens motion diagnostics
SINAMICS S120 F07900 motor blocked or speed controller at its limit?
An S120 axis that faults on F07900 may stop a whole machine. The displayed code is not proof that the motor is physically jammed: drive monitoring, process loading, feedback and control context all matter. West Engineering Systems provides onsite industrial controls troubleshooting to identify the fault area and help determine next steps. We are based in Appleton, Wisconsin, and provide field service across the United States.
Discuss the S120 Axis FaultCall (920) 851-6363 with the axis and code displayed.
Did the axis move, stall or fault before motion?
Siemens' S120/S150 list manual describes F07900 as “Drive: Motor blocked/speed controller at its limit.” The specific alarm response and diagnostic values depend on the installed drive object, firmware and configuration. Do not infer a seized machine or replace a motor based on this message alone.
No visible movement
Record the commanded operation and whether the axis made any motion before the fault. A held load, mechanical restraint, missing enable or feedback question may require different investigation; an HMI's “motor blocked” shorthand cannot distinguish them.
Moves before faulting
Describe where in the cycle it stops, whether it happens in one direction or under one load, and what other drive messages preceded F07900. Timing and sequence help a qualified technician compare actual motion with the controller request.
Recent motion work
Provide records of motor, feedback, coupling, drive or project changes. The same observed code after a configuration change may warrant different evidence than a new obstruction; neither is established without the installed project's diagnostics.
Onsite diagnostic goal: correlate the axis request, available speed/torque feedback, alarm history and safe mechanical observations to identify a defensible next action—not promise an immediate restart.
What to gather before calling
- Facility, machine section and axis name, plus what the operator requested.
- F07900 fault text and value, earlier alarms and HMI message, if already visible.
- Whether the axis moved, where it stopped and whether the fault repeats in a particular existing cycle.
- Known S120 components, motor/encoder identification, drawings and unmodified project backup.
Not the same as an axis jump
Our S120 A07496 positioning-axis case documents a particular drive-feedback/configuration finding; it does not diagnose F07900 on another machine. If the source of a stopped line remains unknown, start with the machine-down overview. If the fault is on a G120 rather than an S120, use the G120 start/fault guide.
