TIA Portal V13 to V15.1 Upgrade: S7-1200 and CM 1243-5 Compile Errors

A servo friction welder project using a Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 CPU 1214C DC/DC/Rly and CM 1243-5 PROFIBUS communications module encountered hardware configuration errors during a TIA Portal upgrade. The final corrective change is not confirmed. This is a project-compilation case, not a verified machine-down or repair story.

Discuss a Siemens Controls Issue

What the upgraded project reported

The project was being migrated from TIA Portal V13 to V15.1. Its PLC/PROFIBUS hardware configuration did not compile cleanly. The reported messages were:

CM 1243-5 compatibility error

“The CPU firmware version V4 and higher is not supported.”

PROFIBUS_1 DP cycle error

“The DP cycle must be higher than 0.031848.”

Separate protection warning

The PLC did not have a configured protection level. This warning was observed alongside the two errors; it has not been established as their cause.

The quoted DP cycle value is reproduced as reported, without assuming a unit or a replacement value. A compile message about CPU firmware does not, by itself, establish the firmware installed on the physical CPU or module.

Where the troubleshooting focused

The investigation focused on the S7-1200 hardware configuration, compatibility between the configured CPU firmware and CM 1243-5, the PROFIBUS network configuration and DP cycle timing, and the hardware compile results after the TIA Portal project upgrade.

The next action was to determine which hardware/firmware compatibility setting and PROFIBUS cycle configuration needed correction before the upgraded project could compile successfully. For a similar project, useful information to gather includes:

  • The TIA Portal source and target versions and a copy of the unmodified source project.
  • The CPU and communications module order numbers and their configured and installed firmware versions, if known.
  • The exact hardware compile messages, including the PROFIBUS_1 DP cycle value and any separate warnings.
  • Whether the issue is confined to offline project compilation or also affects machine operation.

These are diagnostic inputs, not a prescribed firmware update, downgrade, or PROFIBUS parameter change. Verify the actual equipment and applicable Siemens documentation before making configuration changes. Follow site authorization and safety procedures for any access to live equipment.

What this case does—and does not—establish

Outcome not confirmed: Whether the errors were resolved, and by what change, is not confirmed. We cannot claim a successful compile, PLC download, machine restart, production recovery, or equipment repair from the available case details.

The V4-and-higher wording is the compiler message in this project, not a blanket statement that every CM 1243-5 is incompatible with every V4 CPU. The protection-level warning is not presented as a fix for either compile error.

If your machine is actually stopped or will not start, our Siemens machine-down diagnostic guide covers the different information to gather from PLC, HMI, and drive evidence.
